Overview
The Transmission Line Engineer is responsible for providing client support in planning, designing and analyzing overhead line projects. This includes all aspects from scoping and estimating through construction support and closeout.
Responsibilities
- Design transmission line routes, configurations, and structures to meet client project specifications and regulatory standards for voltages ranging from 25kV and up.
- Conduct detailed structural analysis, sag-tension calculations, and clearance checks using industry-standard software (e.g., PLS-CADD, PLS-Pole) to ensure reliability, efficiency, and compliance with client standards and applicable safety codes.
- Prepare comprehensive design packages including drawings and specifications for bidding, permitting, and construction.
- Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams including ROW, environmental specialists, and project managers to execute transmission line design projects.
- Conduct site visits as required to assess terrain conditions, identify potential obstacles, and propose effective solutions.
- Assist in the preparation of project estimates, schedules, and procurement strategies related to transmission line design and construction activities.
- Provide technical support during construction phases, addressing design modifications and ensuring adherence to project specifications and timelines.
- Gain familiarity and stay up to date with client standards and procedures and follow requirements.
- Participate in regular client meetings to provide project updates.

- Must keep current on the “state of the art” in their design specialty through review of periodicals and continuing education.
- Strong understanding of electrical and structural engineering principles relevant to high-voltage transmission systems.
-
Familiarity with applicable industry standards and codes (e.g., NESC, IEEE, ASCE) governing transmission line design and construction.
-
Demonstrated analytical skills with the ability to solve complex technical challenges efficiently.
- Proficiency in transmission line design software such as PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, FAD Tools, and AutoCAD.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience specifically in the design and analysis of transmission lines operating at 25kV and higher.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or eligibility to obtain a plus.
