Overview
The Surveyor/Crew Chief/Project Manager takes full technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating assignments. Plans and develops projects concerned with unique or controversial problems which may have an important effect on major company projects. While this individual is highly accomplished technically, the position does not involve significant management responsibility.
Responsibilities
- Supervise and run survey crew operations.
- Perform ALTA/ACSM Land Title Surveys, Calculate Plats, Perform Boundary and Lot Splits.
- Perform As-built Surveys, Topographic Surveys, Construction Staking and Transportation projects with ODOT guidelines.
- Perform record search at recorders offices and government entities.
- Prepares complex calculations, designs, specifications and/or reports for checking and reviewing by others.
- Checks routine calculations, designs, specifications and/or reports prepared by others.
- Assumes complete responsibility for engineering within his/her discipline for routine projects.
- Directs technicians and/or drafters assigned to the department.
- Coordinates work of his/her discipline with other disciplines.
- Makes recommendation and/or decisions on unusual or complicated issues.
- Coordinates all aspects of project document completion within the company and externally with clients and other design professionals.
- Directs and assists co-workers with performing field measurements.
- May assess the requirements of a project, break a project down into tasks, and work with a Project Manager to determine scope, budget and staffing for a project.
- Serves as Project Engineer/Surveyor on complex, single-discipline projects and complex multi-discipline projects.
- Reviews work of the project design team. Checks the progress of work and alerts the Project Manager to needed changes to the scope or other services.
- Works with code officials and other design professionals when an interpretation or exception to the building code is required.
- Prepares or reviews construction budgets based on experience and scope of project.
- Performs construction observation of others on complex projects.
- Directs construction observation of others on routine projects.
- Promotes the use of and participates in the development of company design and production standards.
- Assists in the education and development of design staff and acts as a resource for design questions.
- Maintains neat and organized work to allow efficient access to project information required by other team members.
- Follow instructions/work orders from project managers and field superintendents.
- Prepare legal descriptions.
- Maintain and adhere to QA/QC procedures/note taking and maintaining office and field project material.
- Assists with whatever duties are required to deliver a quality project on schedule and within budget.
- May exercise some supervision over staff assigned a project.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Surveying or other related degree required, with specialization in the respective department.
- 2-5 years of land surveying experience in charge of field crews for all aspects of surveying and types of surveys.
- Proficiency with Trimble and Leica GPS, Trimble Robotic Total Station (S6), Trimble (TSC7) and TDS Ranger Data Collectors.
- Strong math skills.
- AutoCAD and Civil3D Experience is a plus. Ohio PE, PS License preferred.
- Ohio Drivers’ License.
- Ability to work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to organize field notes and execute field staking.
- Strong verbal/communication skills and computer skills.
- Construction layout, ability to read and comprehend Construction Plans.
- Must have knowledge of applicable building codes.
- Must keep current on the “state of the art” in their design specialty through review of periodicals and continuing education.
- Proficient in the use of computer for design and understand CAD operations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, and the client.

- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Proficient in the PC/windows environment with experience in e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
