Overview
The Senior Substation Designer is responsible for planning and conducting a complete project or relatively limited scope or portion of a large and more diverse project. Selecting and adapting plans, techniques, designs, or layouts. Reviews and analyzes a variety of design data to determine requirements to meet objectives. Prepares layouts, detailed specifications, parts/materials lists, estimates, procedures, etc. May supervise other designers.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Leads the physical design and layout of substation projects, including equipment arrangement, conduit routing, grounding, and steel structures, for voltages ranging from 25kV to 500kV.
- ​Prepares complete and accurate design packages, including plan views, sections, details, BOMs, and wiring diagrams for procurement and construction.
- Independently interprets and applies engineering drawings, design specifications, and technical standards to create functional and code-compliant substation layouts.
- Coordinates closely with project engineers and stakeholders to ensure all design elements align with project scope, site conditions, and client requirements.
- Participates in and occasionally leads design review meetings, constructability reviews, and internal QA/QC checks.
- Assists in the preparation of cost estimates, technical scopes, and procurement support documentation.
- Conducts site visits or supports field verification as needed to ensure accurate design inputs and construction alignment.
- Reviews and applies relevant standards and codes (e.g., NESC, IEEE, NEC, ASCE) during design development.
- Mentors and guides junior designers and drafters, providing design reviews and best practice insights.
- Supports the continuous improvement of design tools, templates, CAD standards, and workflows.
- May coordinate design activities and deliverables for multiple small to mid-size projects, ensuring quality, schedule, and budget objectives are met.
Minimum Qualifications
- Technical or Associates Degree in applicable design disciplines from an accredited technical institution or college required.
- 5+ years of related drafting and/or design experience required.
- Valid Ohio Drivers’ License required.
- Proficient in the PC/windows environment with experience in e-mail, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.
